What you need
Ingredient Notes
Rice Krispies Cereal vs Generic Brand - I've found that most generic brands work just fine in this recipe. Choose your favorite brand of crispy rice cereal!
Marshmallows - I prefer using mini marshmallows because they melt faster than regular sized marshmallows but you can use either for this recipe
Butter - Use unsalted butter for best results (that way you don't have extra salt in the recipe). Helpful hint: Be sure to fully melt the butter before adding in the marshmallows. This helps the marshmallows melt more evenly and quickly!
How to make this classic treat
1) First you make your homemade rice krispie treats. Melt butter in a large saucepan on medium heat. Add the marshmallows and stir constantly until melted. Remove from the heat and stir the cereal into the marshmallow mixture until well coated.
2) Spoon rice krispie mixture into buttered 9x13 pan (or you can spray with non-stick cooking spray). Use the back of a measuring cup (greased) to smooth top. Let harden (about 45 minutes) and cut into rectangles with a large sharp knife on a clean cutting board.
3) Melt chocolate chips following the instructions on the package and then spoon into a disposable pastry bag. Cut a small hole in the corner of bag to make antlers. Use a small amount of melted chocolate under the candy eyes and red m&m nose to attach to the rice krispie treat.
4) Carefully push a popsicle stick into the top of each treat (above the antlers).
Expert Tips
• If you're in a hurry, purchase pre-made rice crispy treats for an even simpler treat.
• Fun Gift Idea! These reindeer rice krispie treats also make a great gift! After preparing the treats carefully place them in cellophane bags and tie them closed with a festive colored ribbon!
• Since they're no-bake, this is a great way to keep the kids entertained at Christmas!
• Popsicle Sticks - Make sure you use food grade popsicle sticks and not the ones made for crafts. Available online or at a craft store in the cake decorating section.
• More krispie treats - You might also love these Peppermint Bark Rice Krispie Treats, they taste like the delicious candy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use pre-made rice krispy treats for this recipe? Absolutely yes! If you're short on time, this is a great shortcut!
How do I store my treats? If you are not serving your Rudolph reindeers right away, you'lll need to store them so that they don't not get stale. Store them in an airtight container. They should last for 5-7 days this way.
Can I freeze them? Yes, you can freeze Rice Krispie Treats. In fact, it is a great way to extend the shelf life of these treats. You can simply store them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to one month. If you're going to freeze them, do NOT do the decorations. The chocolate and candies won't do well in the freezer, so don't freeze the decorated treats.
What can I use for the nose instead of an M&M? If you don’t have M&Ms you can also use any red candy such as a jelly bean or red hot. You could even use a small bit of red licorice that has been cut down with kitchen scissors.
