What you need
Ingredient notes
• Pancake Mix - Use your favorite brand of pancake mix. Then prepare according to the package instructions.
• Nutella - Nutella is a chocolate hazelnut spread that is slightly sweet and super delicious! Most grocery stores carry it. If you can't find the brand name, you can use a generic chocolate hazelnut spread or imitation kind.
• Toppings - Fresh fruit (such as sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries), chopped pecans or sliced almonds, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, caramel sauce, maple syrup, peanut butter, biscoff spread or whipped cream are all great toppings for these Nutella pancakes. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you've got yourself a delicious dessert!
How to make nutella stuffed pancakes
1) Line a cookie sheet or baking tray with parchment paper or wax paper. Scoop dollops of Nutella onto parchment paper and flatten slightly with back of spoon. I used a generous tablespoonful of Nutella. Place Nutella discs in freezer for 1 hour.
2) In a large mixing bowl, mix up the pancake batter according to package instructions. Use a little bit of unflavored oil to grease your skillet. I like avocado oil Spread about ⅓ cup batter on hot non-stick skillet or griddle over medium high heat. Place frozen disk of Nutella in middle of the batter, then spoon a little more batter on top of the Nutella.
3) Flip pancake when you start to see bubbles on the edges (about 2 miuntes). Remove from griddle about 2 minutes after flipping pancake or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining batter and discs of Nutella. Recipe. makes 8 pancakes. Serve with unsalted butter and syrup, or toppings of your choice.
Expert tips
• Plan ahead! Several hours before you plan on making the pancakes, prep the chocolate hazelnut spread or Nutella disks. They need time to freeze! See recipe below for details.
• Heat griddle or pan over medium heat until a drop of water skitters across the surface. Lightly grease the pan with oil or clarified butter. (Melted butter will burn.)
• These pancakes can be frozen for up to 3 months. Make sure to defrost the pancakes completely then reheat in a skillet or oven until warmed through. When freezing, wrap each pancake in plastic wrap and place them in a ziplock container or freezer baggie.
• Make mini pancakes, if you wish. It's the perfect treat! Just make your Nutella discs much smaller (about a teaspoon of Nutella).
• When serving, try an extra Nutella drizzle on top of your pancakes.
Frequently asked questions
• How long do these pancakes stay fresh? It's best to eat them as soon as possible. The experience of the warm, molten Nutella middle is the all time best!
• Can I use whole milk instead of water for box pancake mix? Yes, you can use Milk or a non-dairy milk Instead Of Water. Even though the mix may call for water, you can easily substitute that for regular cow's milk or an alternative milk such as oat milk, cashew milk or almond milk.
• How long do you leave pancakes on each side? Make 1 or 2 more pancakes, taking care to keep them evenly spaced apart. Cook, until bubbles break the surface of the pancakes, and the undersides are golden brown, about 2 minutes. Flip with a spatula and cook about 1 minute more on the second side.
